What’s Included : 1 Tube Of M1 Adhesive
- M-1 by Chem Link is a moisture cure, multi-purpose structural adhesive/sealant designed for bonding and sealing a wide range of construction materials.
- M-1 forms a tough, elastic & waterproof seal to most roofing materials, masonry, wood, glass, aluminum and foam. M-1 bonds well to most building surfaces including metal flashing, copings, skylights, and HVAC surfaces and makes for an excellent construction adhesive sealant for multiple applications.
Why We Use M1 Adhesive for Heat Cable Roof Clips
When installing a heat cable system, the method of attachment is just as critical as the cable itself. At HeatCable.com, we frequently recommend using M1 Structural Adhesive for adhering roof clips, particularly on metal roofs or areas where you want to avoid penetrating the roof deck with screws or nails.
The “No-Hole” Solution The primary advantage of using M1 adhesive is preserving the integrity of your roof. By gluing clips rather than nailing them, you eliminate potential leak points. Eric Wimmer has highlighted this method on the Wasatch Heat Cable YouTube channel as a preferred technique for metal roofing and flat membranes where mechanical fasteners aren’t an option.
Why M1 Specifically? Not all construction adhesives can handle the harsh freeze-thaw cycles that heat cable systems endure. We rely on Chemlink M1 because:
- Moisture Cure: It can be applied in damp conditions and temperatures as low as 30Β°F, which is often when heat cable installs happen.
- Zero Shrinkage: It contains no solvents, so it wonβt shrink and pull away from the clip as it cures.
- High Strength: It creates a rubber-like, waterproof seal that withstands the drag of heavy snow and ice loads on the cable.
π₯ PRO-TIPS FROM THE FIELD
Donβt just install itβinstall it like a pro.
Achieving a “lifetime” hold depends on proper surface preparation. Follow these expert tips from our 20 years in the field:
-
Clean the Contact Point: Use a wire brush or a stiff nylon brush to remove loose granules, dirt, or oxidation from the roof surface. For metal or membrane roofs, a quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol ensures a grease-free bond.
-
Temperature Matters: For the best results, apply the M1 adhesive when temperatures are above 40Β°F (4Β°C). If you must install in colder weather, keep the adhesive tubes in a warm truck or bucket until the moment of use to maintain a smooth flow.
-
The βHershey Kissβ Method: When using the M-1 glue, donβt smear it flat like paint. Apply a nickel-sized dollop (shaped like a Hershey Kiss) under the clip. Press the clip down until glue pushes through the holes, but leave a layer of adhesive between the clip and the roof. This creates a chemical bond that lasts for decades.
-
Utilize the Bendable Tab: On the drip edge, bend the patented tab to flush against the vertical face. Applying adhesive to this secondary surface area significantly increases the clipβs resistance to heavy snow loads sliding off the roof.
-
Cure Time: While the adhesive skins over quickly, avoid tensioning the heat cable immediately. Let the clips set for several days before final cable installation for maximum strength.
