3M 3381 foil tape is used in heat cable installation to secure self-regulating cable to pipes and improve thermal conductivity. When it comes to pipe tracing, your heat cable is only as effective as its contact with the pipe. 3M™ 3381 Silver Foil Tape is the industry-standard solution for securing self-regulating heat cable to metal or plastic piping.

Unlike standard plastic zip ties or electrical tape—which can create “hot spots” or fail over time—this aluminum foil tape is engineered to spread the heat and protect your plumbing by acting as a high-efficiency thermal bridge.

How much 3M™ 3381 Foil Tape do I need?

This table is based on a single run of heat cable secured lengthwise along the pipe. For pipe diameters larger than 4″, we recommend a “double-wrap” or spiral method, which may require additional rolls.

For maximum efficiency, apply the tape longitudinally (lengthwise) over the entire run of the cable. This fully “sandwiches” the cable against the pipe, drastically increasing the heat transfer surface area compared to simple “spiral” wrapping.

Pro-Tip from the Field:

“One roll gives you 150 feet of coverage. If you’re doing a standard 100-foot pipe run, one roll is plenty to cover the cable and wrap your valves and elbows. If you have multiple lines or larger diameter pipes, grab two to ensure you have that critical 10% overlap.”
