Premium Heat Cable Splice & Connection Kit
Whatās In The Box:
-
(1) Large Heat Shrink Tubing: The outer armor that seals the entire connection.
-
(1) Long Mastic Strip: The primary moisture barrier.
-
(2) Small Mastic Strips: For sealing the individual bus wire connections.
-
(2) Yellow Insulated Crimps: For securely joining the conductive bus wires.
-
(1) Copper Crimp: For maintaining ground braid continuity across the splice.
Extend Your Run. Repair a Cut. Do It Permanently.
Did you come up ten feet short on a roof line? Did a gutter cleaning accident slice your cable? Don’t scrap the whole run.
The Wasatch Heat Cable Splice Kit is the professional solution for connecting two pieces of self-regulating heat cable together. This isn’t a “twist-and-tape” fix. This is the exact industrial-grade splice kit we use on our trucks every day. When installed correctly, this connection creates a completely water-tight, electrically sound bond that is just as tough as the cable itself.
Why Pros Trust This Kit:
- Zero Water Ingress: Moisture is the enemy of heat cable. Our kit relies on high-grade mastic sealant and dual-wall adhesive heat shrink tubing to create a seal that stands up to standing water and freeze/thaw cycles.
- Mechanical Integrity: We don’t rely on soldering which can become brittle in the cold. We use heavy-duty crimps to ensure the electrical current passes through the splice without resistance or heat buildup.
-
Universal Fit: Designed specifically for Drexan MultiTraceĀ® and other standard self-regulating cables.
š„ Pro-Tips from the Field
Advice from Eric Wimmer to ensure your splice lasts 20+ years.
-
Stagger Your Cuts: Don’t cut both bus wires at the exact same length. Cut one about 1/2 inch shorter than the other on both sides of the cable. When you crimp them, the crimps won’t be right next to each other. This keeps the splice thin and prevents it from looking like a “snake that ate a rat” inside the gutter.
-
Heat Gun Required: Do not use a lighter or a torch. You need even, consistent heat to shrink the tubing and melt the adhesive liner inside. If you burn the tubing, you compromise the waterproof seal.
-
Test Before You Shrink: Always use an Ohm meter to check continuity after you crimp but before you shrink the tubing. It saves you from having to cut it all open if a crimp isn’t tight enough.
-
Stagger Your Cuts: Don’t cut both bus wires at the exact same length. Cut one about 1/2 inch shorter than the other on both sides of the cable you are joining. When you crimp them, the connectors won’t sit side-by-side. This keeps the splice thin (low profile) and prevents it from looking like a “snake that ate a rat” inside your gutter.
-
The “Tug Test”: After you crimp your wires, give them a firm tug. If they move, crimp them again. A loose connection is a fire hazard and the #1 reason splices fail.
-
Don’t Overheat: When shrinking the tubing, keep the heat gun moving. You want to see the sealant ooze out the ends slightlyāthatās your visual indicator of a waterproof sealābut you don’t want to char the jacket.
š Tools You Will Need:
This kit provides the parts, but you will need the following tools to complete the install:
-
Heat Gun: A lighter or hair dryer gets not hot enough. You need a heat gun to properly activate the adhesive lining in the shrink tubing.
-
Wire Strippers/Utility Knife: To carefully strip back the outer jacket and expose the bus wires.
-
Crimping Tool: A solid pair of crimpers to ensure the wires never pull loose.
ā ļø Critical Warning: Watch Your Lengths!
Just because you can extend the cable doesn’t mean you always should. Every heat cable circuit has a “Maximum Circuit Length” based on the voltage (120V vs 240V) and the amperage of your breaker.
-
Example: If your breaker can only handle 100 feet of cable, splicing an extra 50 feet onto an existing 80-foot run will trip the breaker.
-
Always check the spec sheet for your specific cable type to ensure the total combined length of the spliced run stays within safe electrical limits.
